Journal Examines Mother-Preborn Bond

SUMMARY: The mother-preborn bond is very important, a medical journal says.

The bond between a mother and her preborn child is the subject of several articles in this month's Medical Student Journal of the American Medical Association.

With a sonogram Karyn Knapp is seeing her baby for the first time. She can almost count the fingers and toes, even though she's only 13 weeks pregnant.

"I already love (the baby) and care about what's going on," Knapp said.

This month's Medical Student Journal of the American Medical Association (MSJAMA) focused on the mother-preborn bond in several articles. Dr. Amy Salisbury, author of one of the MSJAMA articles, said the attachment is what
makes a woman care for herself and her child during pregnancy.

"(It is) what a woman will think about when she thinks of her fetus, imagining the future, (from) nurturing herself to preparing for the future for the baby," Salisbury said.

Pro-life advocates say the bond also accounts for the trauma women feel after having an abortion. Sydna Masse, of Ramah International, a Christian ministry that helps women who have had abortions, said even those that are strongly
pro-abortion feel the loss.

"In working with thousands of post-abortive women, including being post-abortive myself, I know that there comes a point in all our lives when we understand that we've had a great loss," Masse said. "Abortion is one thing that when a woman looks back, she realizes deep down in her soul that she's lost a child that she deeply misses."

The journal articles reveal that the medical community is beginning to acknowledge the bond that pro-life groups have long claimed.
