Anti-abortion group watching progress
of bill Honolulu Advertiser, Wednesday,January 23, 2002
Organizers estimated that nearly 1,000 anti-abortion activists took
part in a March for Life rally at the state Capitol yesterday on
the 29th anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United
States.
The rally was sponsored
by Hawai'i Right to Life, which has held a march every year since
the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 ruling in the Roe v. Wade case.
John Long, executive director of
Hawai'i Right to Life, said he was encouraged by yesterday's turnout,
which he said was nearly 300 more people than last year's event.
Long said his group will be
watching the progress of two measures before the Legislature this
year, including a bill that deals with parental consent for minors
who want to get abortions.
The other measure would call
for harsher punishment for people who attack pregnant women in attempts
to cause miscarriages or kill the unborn babies. Such crimes would
be classified as murders or attempted murders.
