Minnesota Women's Right to Know Bill Passes Another Committee

St. Paul, MN -- The pro-life bill that would require abortion practitioners to give women information about abortion risks and alternatives 24 hours prior to performing the abortion unanimously sailed through the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee today morning. There was little discussion.

The bill moves next to the House Way & Means Committee, its fifth House panel, and then on to the House floor where it is expected to pass with ease. Similar pro-life laws in other states have reduced the number of abortions by as much as one-third.

The Woman's Right to Know Act (H.F. 668), authored by Rep. Mary Liz Holberg, R-Lakeville, ensures women considering abortion receive medically accurate information about fetal development and abortion's risks and alternatives well before undergoing the procedure. The bill has now passed through four House committees.

"The Woman's Right to Know Act is gaining momentum and support as it passes through each of these committees," said Scott Fischbach, the director of Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life. "We are confident that women will soon be given the information that has been denied to them for so long in order to truly make an informed decision about abortion."

"Abortion advocates admit that they do not provide this information to women before they arrive at the clinic for the abortion," said Fischbach. "It is vital that women have this information while they are still considering their options."

The Woman's Right to Know Act has 118 total sponsors among legislators - 82 House sponsors and 36 Senate sponsors. According to a February 2002 Mason-Dixon poll, 73 percent of Minnesota voters also support the bill.
